Fort Collins, Fossil Ridge earn state softball seeds

The Fort Collins High School softball team is the No. 6 seed in the Class 5A state tournament after winning its regional over the weekend.

The Lambkins (14-7) will open the state tournament at 12:15 p.m. Friday against No. 11 Legend (16-5-1). The winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face the winner of No. 3 Eaglecrest (17-4) and No. 14 Brighton (18-4).

Fossil Ridge (17-5) is the No. 12 seed after finishing second at regionals last week. The SaberCats play at 10 a.m. Friday against No. 5 Dakota Ridge (13-8). The winner advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of No. 4 Loveland (15-6) and No. 13 Ralston Valley (13-8).

Quarterfinals are Friday afternoon for the single-elimination tournament. Semifinals and the championship game are Saturday. All games are played at Aurora Sports Park in southeast Denver.

Fort Collins finished second in the Front Range League. The Lambkins were also the No. 6 seed in the state tournament last season, losing in the first round to Grandview.

Fossil Ridge finished third in the FRL. The SaberCats advanced to the 5A semis each of the last three seasons.
