GOOCHLAND — The Goochland Bulldogs ground out an impressive 35-0 win Friday over visiting Robert E. Lee with solid performance on both sides of the ball. The Leemen were able to move the ball with some success against a staunch Bulldog defensive charge, but couldn’t convert chances into points.
“Coach Joe Fowler does a terrific job with the Goochland program, which is hard-nosed, very deep and multi-faceted,” said second-year Lee head coach Scott Girolmo. “They don’t make a lot of mistakes, but we failed to play physical enough.”
The Leemen (2-2) were without the services of explosive running back Brendon Witherspoon, but Lee quarterback Jayden Williams worked hard against the Bulldogs’ stingy defense.
Goochland (4-0), who made it to the second round of the Region 2A East playoffs last season, behind the leadership of quarterback Tanner Bradshaw and elusive and powerful running backs Cordell Maddox and Jasper Carter, built a 21-0 lead by halftime and thwarted several Lee scoring chances.
Carter scored Goochland’s fourth touchdown with 3:32 remaining in the third period and backup running back Massie Neal finished the scoring in the fourth quarter on a five-yard TD with 8:49 remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs gained 234 yards on the ground and Bradshaw completed five passes for 76 yards.
The Goochland defense held Lee to just 100 total yards for the game, 88 coming on the ground.
“We weren’t prepared well enough and that’s my fault,” Girolmo said. “We were in position to make plays, but we have to be able to tackle in space and also sustain blocks in space.”
The Lee coach stated that the Leemen will attempt to simplify things on offense for next week’s homecoming matchup against Turner Ashby and demand a success-driven attitude on defense.
Girolmo praised the efforts of Dylan Culpen on both sides of the ball, the play of Hurliq Williams playing through injury, the hard running of backup runner Tavon Robertson late in the game and the response to adversity of quarterback Jayden Williams.
“I can guarantee that no one will outwork us next week,” Girolmo concluded.
