Hawks pop back in state rankings, Cocoa & Palm Bay hold

An off week can be beneficial to a sports team’s health, and apparently it can be good for rankings.

Opening their first game of the year Viera High's football team bursts through the team banner.

Opening their first game of the year Viera High’s football team bursts through the team banner.

Viera, which lost its Week 7 game at Palm Bay to Hurricane Matthew, popped back into the Class 7A rankings compiled by the Associated Press and announced Tuesday. The Hawks were No. 10 with a record of 4-2. St. Thomas Aquinas was No. 1.

Cocoa High strengthened its hold on No. 1 in Class 4A, where defending champion Miami Booker T. Washington lost again to drop to 4-3. The 3-1 Tigers, whose game against Daytona Beach Mainland was also cancelled, will host Orlando Jones on Friday with the lead in District 5-4A on the line. Jones was the one 4A team receiving votes but not enough to crack the top five.

Ten of 12 voters put Cocoa at the top of the poll for a total of 118 points, ahead of No. 2 Jacksonville Bolles, with 108.

Palm Bay’s Lankford-Johnson wins Big 10 award at Purdue

Palm Bay remained fourth in 5A for the second week in a row. Plantation American Heritage stayed at the top of the 5A poll, and Merritt Island again got votes.

Melbourne Central Catholic just missed the Class 3A top five, in part thanks to a lost opportunity with the storm-related cancellation of its game at second-ranked Lakeland Christian. The 5-0 Hustlers earned 33 points, trailing fifth-ranked First Academy (48). Oxbridge Academy was the top team.

Heritage earned a vote in 6A, where Mainland remained No. 1.

The rest of the top-ranked teams were Class 8A’s Apopka, Cambridge Christian in 2A and Madison County (1A).
