Heartbreaker: Texas QB accounts for six TDs and 613 yards, but team loses by point

John Tyler (Tyler, Texas) quarterback Bryson Smith, a Houston commit, had himself a game Friday night.

Three touchdown passes and 389 yards in the air. Three rushing touchdowns and 224 yards on the ground.

That’s six TDs and 613 yards of total offense.

But amazingly, his team ended up on the short end of a 59-58 duel to Rockwall in a game that was tied five times.

Those numbers would be bigger — and perhaps the game would have had a different result — had Smith’s 53-yard TD run not been called back by a taunting penalty.

The winning points came on a two-point conversion with 3:13 remaining.

John Tyler scored on nine of its 11 possessions. The only two when it didn’t score? A third-quarter turnover and the end of the game.
