Today we’re eager to announce the launch of the Northern Colorado Sports Awards program.
The program will honor more than 450 student-athletes and will culminate in an end-of-the-year celebration. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will be the keynote speaker.
He’ll share his stories of success — and lessons learned — with students, coaches and the many people who support our high school athletes, including parents and grandparents, and brothers and sisters.
But before Manning comes to Northern Colorado, we’ve created plenty of ways to honor Northern Colorado’s student-athletes.
First, we’ve launched an Athlete of the Week program. Each week, you can nominate an athlete who had a great performance — be it in the long jump, on the basketball court or in the swimming pool. All varsity sports participants can be honored as Athletes of the Week.
We will name a male and female athlete each week. Honorees will be featured in the Coloradoan newspaper and online. They’ll also receive a special surprise from the Coloradoan at their school.
NOMINATE: Athlete of the Week nomination form
Second, at the end of each season, we’ll name Northern Colorado All-Area teams. These teams will be selected from team and individual performances, by nominations from coaches and athletic directors, and Athlete of the Week nominations.
Those who are honored on Northern Colorado All-Area first and second teams will be invited to join Peyton Manning at the Northern Colorado Sports Awards program on May 17. Thanks to support from local businesses, the student-athletes will enjoy an evening of celebration, including Manning, music and dinner — all at no cost.
“Brown’s Shoe Fit is committed to being a partner in the community and thrilled to have the opportunity to support the achievements of these outstanding student athletes,” said Jim Zimmerman, owner and manager of Brown’s Shoe Fit in Fort Collins, an event sponsor.
We’re also excited to offer an opportunity to weigh in on additional honors, such as best band performances and top school spirit.
Why are we making the massive investment? Because we know our student-athletes work hard. So do parents and others on each student-athlete’s support team.
Please join us as we come together through the season and in May to celebrate the achievements of our very fine community.
