It was nine years ago in 2007 and Captain Shreve was returning to playing in Class 5A after a two-year stint in Class 4A. The Gators started the season 2-0, just as they have this season. Only difference in 2007 and now is they were facing sixth-ranked Ruston which was also 2-0.

There were questions as to whether Shreve belonged back in 5A. The Gators answered those questions by shocking the Bearcats 35-21 on that night at Lee Hedges Stadium.

Tied at 21-21 early in the second half, one of Captain Shreve’s top players Greg Washington went down with a broken femur. After a 40 minute delay the Gator offense went to work behind quarterback Marc Kimball. The senior hit on 20 of 27 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Travis Anderson, who is second all-time in receptions for the school, caught 7 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in the game.

After a brief celebration at Lee Hedges, the Gators signed the game ball and took it to Washington at the hospital late Thursday night.

Each week I will take a look back in time.
