Class 5A power Westfield was able to hold off Brebeuf Jesuit Friday night.

WESTFIELD —  With the conclusion of the regular season, Westfield coach  Jake Gilbert said he is excited for the Shamrocks to move into  the state tournament with one clear goal — winning a state championship.

“The JV season is over; the freshman season is over,” Gilbert said. “All of our focus is on the tournament.”

The Shamrocks have certainly been focused on the way there, posting a 7-2 regular season record after Friday night’s  37-21 win against Brebeuf Jesuit.

“It’s exciting for our seniors,” Gilbert said. “I’m so proud of our seniors, not just for tonight, but for the past four years (and) all the buy-in, all the effort over the course of four years that they’ve given us.”

Week 9 high school football roundup

After a scoreless first quarter, Westfield took a 6-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Andy Sweet.

Brebeuf responded with a touchdown of its own, when quarterback Luke Iffert hit wide receiver Jacob Pressler on a 21-yard pass down the sideline. Pressler led the Braves with 106 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Iffert completed 22-of-32 passes for 278 yards and added 75 yards on the ground. Brebeuf finished with 394 yards of total offense.

“I feel like their quarterback is as good as any player we’ve seen,” Gilbert said of Iffert. “He’s terrific. He gave us fits last year and he gave us fits this year.”

Westfield regained the lead on the ensuing possession off two big plays. First, Evan Manley snagged a one-handed, 41-yard pass from Sweet. On the very next play, running back   Nate Froelich   scampered around the left end to give Westfield a 13-7 lead.

Later in the half, Sweet led the Shamrocks down the field with less than two minutes to play, setting up Will Harrison, who drilled a 50-yard field goal to extend the lead to 16-7 before halftime.

After Brebeuf scored an early third quarter touchdown, Westfield answered with 21 consecutive points. The Shamrocks defense took control, frequently pressuring Iffert and forcing back-to-back three-and-outs.

“Our pass rush was a little better,” Gilbert said of the Shamrocks defense in the second half. “We started to get pressure on (Iffert) and that made all the difference. We were happy that we did. He’s hard to stop.”

Westfield’s one-two punch in the running game cashed in.  Froelich scored a 52-yard touchdown, eluding four tackles to rumble into the end zone and extend the lead to two possessions.

Johnny Swidan scored the next two touchdowns, each from 1 yard out.

Froelich finished the game with 117 yards, and Swidan finished with 73. Both scored two touchdowns.

Brebeuf is 4-5 and will face Bishop Chatard in the first round of sectionals next week.
