HS football: Yeast's huge night lifts Center Grove past Cathedral in OT

Russ Yeast finished with five touchdowns as Center Grove beat Cathedral in overtime Friday night.

GREENWOOD — Russ Yeast has been in the spotlight since the first game of the season for Center Grove. Ever since Titus McCoy went down with injury, Yeast has carried the load for the Trojans. Russ Yeast, the rusher, is a scary thought for an opposing defense.

Russ Yeast, the receiver, burst onto the scene Friday night to the tune of seven receptions, 214 yards and five touchdowns. The Class 6A No. 3 Trojans needed every bit of his performance to defeat No. 9 Cathedral 44-41 in overtime.

Yeast came into the game with just 12 receptions on the season, none for touchdowns.

“I just felt like they couldn’t man up with me,” Yeast said. “I felt like I was a better athlete than everybody on the field. I told the coach, ‘Put the ball in my hands and let me do what I do.’ We basically did that and I had a big night.”

The Irish tried to make adjustments. They tried blitzing to hurry quarterback Jack Kellams. They tried doubling up Yeast. But Yeast wouldn’t be stopped.

“He’s kind of fast,” Cathedral coach Rick Streiff deadpanned. “He’s got great speed and when he catches the ball, he’s very elusive in the open field. You try to do some things to take things away. We did several times, but just not enough.”

For Kellams, it was a game of pitch-and-catch. Every single one of his passes went to Yeast.

“It’s a lot of fun having a guy like that who can get his own yards,” he said. “He’s a special talent. Having a guy like that, it’s hard to cover him. It helps our offense a lot … We never felt like we could never not get the ball to him.”

Center Grove led 28-17 at the half after a frenetic end to the second quarter that saw 21 points scored in the final 32 seconds. After trailing by 11 late in the second quarter, Cathedral made it a four-point game as Luke Sanders reeled in a 72-yard touchdown reception from Quincy Keller with 16 seconds to play in the half.

But Yeast snagged his third touchdown of the half as time expired, zigging and zagging 58 yards down the field for a touchdown that restored that 11-point lead.

Center Grove looked poised to run away early in the third quarter as Yeast’s 32-yard touchdown grab midway through the third gave the Trojans a 35-17 lead. But Cathedral stepped up on both sides of the ball in the fourth. The Irish scored 14 consecutive   points in the fourth — scoring grabs by Sanders with 10:50 to play and Collin Stark with 27 seconds on the clock — to tie the score and force overtime.

“I really liked the way our kids battled tonight,” Streiff said. “There was no quit in them. They fought and played extremely well.”

Cathedral kicked a field goal on its overtime possession. But Yeast’s 7-yard touchdown reception sealed Center Grove’s eighth consecutive win.

Now Center Grove has a week off to rest before starting sectional play. After a win like they got Friday night, the Trojans are entering on a high note.

“If you lose, you’ve got to figure out a way to get everybody up,” Center Grove coach Eric Moore said. “Now, you just try to keep it positive, get some rest in the bye week and get ready to play Jeffersonville.”

And one thing is for sure — Yeast will be leading the charge. On the ground. Through the air. Doesn’t matter.

“Big-time players want the ball in big-time games like that,” Yeast said. “I definitely wanted the ball in the key situations.”
