It's go time: Soccer district preview

With 11 seniors and plenty of talent, Richmond is feeling ready to shine.

Coming off a deep boys soccer playoff run that ended in the regional finals – just two wins away from a state finals appearance – the Blue Devils are poised to repeat last year’s performance.

However, they all know it won’t come easy. Not even in the district tournament.

“I really think when it comes down to it it’s between us, Lutheran North, Almont and Imlay City,” Richmond head coach Lance Whitney said.

Imlay City and Richmond each walk into the postseason as co-BWAC champions, and they will be on opposite sides of the bracket. The Spartans will take on Almont in the first round with the winner meeting the winner of Lutheran North vs. Algonac in the semifinals.

Notes: Northern makes playoffs, Deckerville’s perfect

While Richmond is on the other side of the bracket, they could potentially have a run in with a sneaky Croswell-Lexington team in the semifinals.

With Richmond having a bounty of talent playing in their final season, it could cause a sense of urgency as well as it could create some pressure.

“You can’t ignore that, you have to let them know the urgency has to be there,” Whitney said. “Next year we are young, and it could be some time to get to this class. But at the same time you don’t want to put so much pressure on them.”

There will also be a handful of rivalry matchups in the district tournament, starting on Monday when Port Huron and Port Huron Northern collide at 6 p.m. Northern has had the upper hand in the matchup this year, winning twice with a combined score of 10-2.

All eyes will also be on Marysville’s field on Wednesday as it could be the third chapter of St. Clair vs. Marysville should the Vikings beat East Detroit on Monday. The matchup will surely be an even one as Marysville won the first meeting in a 2-1 comeback win, but St. Clair has had the last laugh with a 1-0 win last Wednesday.
