Local roundup: Ketcham tennis tops John Jay

The Roy C. Ketcham High School girls tennis team topped John Jay 4-3 on Wednesday at Cross Court Tennis Club in Wappingers Falls.

Playing in their first varsity match with three Indians out with illness, Ketcham’s fourth-doubles tandem of Amina Tipu and Nyla Elington earned a 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 victory.

Horace Greeley 7, Arlington 0 – Carly Levitz beat the Admirals’ Simran Narula, 6-0, 6-0 at first singles as the visiting Admirals lost in Chappaqua.

Westlake 3, Pawling 2 – Martha Toplonitski won at first singles and the team of Ashley Clisby and Carissa Pollidore won at second doubles, but Pawling fell to 1-7.

Field hockey

Junior Makena Mohl scored a career-high three goals to lead host John Jay to a 6-0 win over Yorktown in Wiccopee.

Taylor Hamill, Hannah Reck and Vivian Snihur each added a goal. Alyssa DeMichael dished two assists, Kendra Garrett, Kayla Gaine, Jenna Fusco and Ashling Sherry each had an assist, and Lauren Kelly had a save for the Patriots (3-2-2).

Webutuck 4, Red Hook 0 – Julia Butts and Emily Simmons each scored twice and Makayla Milano had four saves to lead host Webutuck. Red Hook’s Julianna Shaffrick made nine saves.

Spackenkill 1, Rhinebeck 1 – Senior Sabrina Shih scored her first career goal to tie the score with 18:16 remaining, and Grace Johnson made 10 saves for host Rhinebeck. Sarah Bowen gave Spackenkill a 1-0 lead in the first half and Elizabeth Schwoerer made eight saves.

Horace Greeley 4, Roy C. Ketcham 1 – Julia McDaniel scored off a pass from Katie Wall for visiting Ketcham. Kristen DeSousa made 14 saves in the loss.

Rondout Valley 4, Pine Plains 0 – Alice Wilser made 10 saves in the loss for host Pine Plains (1-5-1).

Boys golf

Will Conti shot a 41 at par-35 Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland to lead host Marlboro to a 172-177 win over Franklin D. Roosevelt. Marlboro is 5-2.

Jeffrey Peters was medalist, shooting a 38 for Roosevelt (7-2).

Spackenkill 156, Millbrook 187 – The host Spartans’ Erik Stauderman had a 3-under-par 33 at McCann Memorial Golf Course to improve to 10-0 in a win over the Blazers.

Ryan Ackert shot a 36 for Spackenkill. Millbrook’s low scorer was Collin Smith (42).

New Paltz 180, Highland 249 – Jaxson Koebel-Secky shot a 2-over-par 38 at New Paltz Golf Course to lead New Paltz (5-2). Nick Puleo carded a 41 for the Huguenots. Highland’s Lenny Casabura had a 57.

Rhinebeck 179, Onteora 188 – Steven Byrum carded a 4-over-par 40 at Red Hook Country Club to lead Rhinebeck. Parker Knoop shot a 45 and Matt Denatale had a 47 for the Hawks (5-2).

Red Hook 174, Wallkill 217 – Austin Lunstedt shot a 1-under-par 35 at Red Hook Golf Club as the host Raiders beat the Panthers.

Ellenville 203, Dover 235 – Nick Harding carded a 50 at par-35 at Harlem Valley Golf Course in the loss for Dover.

Wallkill 212, Highland 248 – Luke Munson shot a 58 for the Huskies at par-35 Turtle Creek Golf Course in Wallkill late Tuesday.

Volleyball

Brooke Vahos had 10 kills and nine assists as host Haldane defeated Roy C. Ketcham 25-17, 25-13, 25-18, in Cold Spring.

Jazmyn O’Dell and Apryl Norton had five aces apiece for Haldane.

Faith Christian Academy 3, Marvelwood 0 – Lydia Wasvary had eight kills and 13 service points to lead host FCA in a 25-23, 25-11, 25-16 win. Olivia Kanwela added eight service points and seven digs for FCA (3-1).

Pine Plains 3, Webutuck 2 – Ashley Starzyk had eight digs, six blocks and 15 kills in the visiting Bombers’ 22-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-21 win late Tuesday in Amenia.

Barijana Caldas had nine kills, six aces, one block and 10 assists for the Warriors.

Saugerties 3, New Paltz 1 – Kelly Brinkman had six aces and six kills for the visiting Huguenots, but the Sawyers won 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 late Tuesday.

Girls swimming

April Cook, Abigail Santos and Morgane Kuyl each won three events as visiting New Paltz defeated Cornwall 101-85 in Orange County League play.

Cook won the 200-yard freestyle (2:14.07) and 500 freestyle (5:50.96). Santos placed first in the 50 freestyle (25.90) and 100 butterfly (1:02.51). Kuyl won the 100 freestyle (57.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.76).

North Rockland 98, Roy C. Ketcham 66 – Heidi Simpfenderfer won the 200 individual medley (2:20.06) and 100 butterfly (1:05.48), but the Indians lost on the road in Thiells.

Kimberly Simpfenderfer won the 200 freestyle (2:10.09) and 100 backstroke (1:05.19) for Ketcham. Ketcham’s Sarah Fitzsimmons won the 100 breaststroke (1:29.30).
