There are three weeks left in the regular season and the high school football playoff picture is starting to come into focus.

Or is it?

The new RPI standings being used to determine the 16-team playoff fields has some fans scratching their heads.

In Class 5A, Poudre High School (5-2) is closest to the playoffs, sitting at No. 18 with a score of 0.528. Fossil Ridge (5-2) is 19th at 0.520. Rocky Mountain (0-6) is 32nd at 0.453.

Fountain-Fort Carson (2-5) is No. 14, up three spots from last week despite a loss. Undefeated Eaglecrest (7-0) is No. 12.

In 4A, Windsor (4-3) is No. 8 and Fort Collins (2-5) is 30th. Resurrection Christian (7-0) is No. 2 in 2A.

The RPI formula often leads to odd results with a small sample size and the hope is by the time Week 10 concludes, standings will match the logic test. There’s expected to be a lot of movement in the standings over the final three weeks.

Seven playoff spots automatically go to conference winners, while the other openings go to the remaining nine top rated teams in the RPI.

Boys soccer

This is the last week of the boys soccer regular season. Entering Monday, Fort Collins (8-3-2) is 8th in 5A with an RPI of 0.593, which has the Lambkins in a strong position to possibly host first-round playoff action.

With a big win over Legacy last week, Fossil Ridge (5-8) has jumped into the playoff picture and the SaberCats sit 22nd in 5A at 0.541.

Rocky Mountain (1-12) is 46th with an RPI of 0.451. Poudre (4-8-1) is 48th with an RPI of 0.447. Both are expected to miss the postseason.

In 4A, Windsor (8-5) is just outside the playoff picture right now and sitting 39th at 0.500. In 3A, Liberty Common (9-3-1) is 22nd at 0.532 and Heritage Christian (7-7) is 55th at 0.435.

Thirty-two teams make the boys soccer playoffs in each classification.

Volleyball

In 5A, Fossil Ridge (14-2) is still in a strong position to host when regionals come around in early November. The SaberCats are ranked second with an RPI of 0.650.

Fort Collins (9-5) is 18th at 0.583, Rocky Mountain (10-6) is 24th at 0.563 and Poudre (2-15) is 55th at 0.431.

In 4A, Windsor (8-8) is 29th at 0.523. 3A Resurrection Christian (12-4) is fourth at 0.620 and Liberty Common (4-11) is 33rd at 0.512. In 1A, Heritage Christian (12-4) is eighth at 0.597.

In 5A, 4A and 3A, 36 teams qualify for regionals, with 12 advancing to the state tournament. In 2A and 1A, 24 teams make regionals and 12 advance to the state tournament.
