Athlete of the Week awards have returned.
The Coloradoan will name a male and female Athlete of the Week every Monday (to run in print Tuesday), honoring stellar athletic performances from the past week. The first awards of the 2016-17 school year will be announced Sept. 26 (in print Sept. 27).
New this school year: Every athlete who wins the weekly honor will automatically receive an invite to the Northern Colorado Sports Awards Show.
The show (guest speaker and date to be announced soon) is our second annual event honoring high school athletes from Fort Collins, Windsor, Loveland, Greeley, Eaton and Johnstown. Peyton Manning was our guest speaker at May’s inaugural event.
How does one win Athlete of the Week? First, they have to be nominated. To do that, simply go to Coloradoan.com/athleteofweek and fill out the form, including information on what that athlete did to make them stand out. This is a weekly award, solely based off on-field performances from Monday through Saturday of the previous week. Anyone can submit a nomination, but any entries without the required information (including headshot of the nominated athlete) won’t be considered. Deadline to nominate an athlete is noon Monday for the previous week of action.
A male and female will be chosen from the nominations. The awards will continue every week through the school year. Keep in mind that career and season stats don’t come into play for Athlete of the Week.
Each athlete’s full season will be taken into account when selecting All-Area teams at the end of each season. Those selected to All-Area teams will also receive an automatic invitation to the Northern Colorado Sports Awards Show.
