Coming off a loss to James I. O’Neill last week, the Marlboro High School football team got back in the win column on Friday.
The Iron Dukes defeated visiting John S. Burke Catholic, 30-14.
“I think our kids played with a lot more passion than we did last week,” Marlboro coach Rich Ward said. “Hopefully we woke up and learned a lesson from O’Neill. But I was pleased with our preparation and we played a solid game.”
Quarterback Sam Mongelli completed seven passes in 12 attempts for two touchdowns. He also racked up 100 yards on the ground. John Perugino caught seven passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Phil DeSantis amassed 138 yards on 20 carries and had a touchdown, while Billy Williamson had two rushing touchdowns. On defense, DeSantis and Zack Atkins each made nine tackles. Myles Barrington added five tackles. The Iron Dukes did not allow a Burke touchdown until the game’s final five minutes.
Marlboro (2-1) visits Red Hook at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.
“Red Hook is putting a lot of points on the board,” Ward added. “They have good athletes, a good quarterback and we have to bring our ‘A’ game. We’re expecting a battle and we’ll see if we can put four quarters of football together.”
