Moyer, Munyan win Sierra League cross country races

Both John Munyan and Erin Moyer seem to be running in peak form early in the season.

Munyan, a senior at Douglas, won the boys 5-kilometer cross country race at Bartley Ranch on Friday in 17 minutes, 1.26 seconds. Galena’s McKennion Melton was second in 17:34.13 and Carson Leavitt, also from Galena was third in 17:43.76

Moyer, a senior at Damonte Ranch, won the girls race in 19:34.61. Gillian Ipsen from Wooster was second in 20:18.25 and Marena Middleton from Damonte was third ibn 20:41.48

Douglas won the boys team title as it had five runners in the top 10 and scored 34 points. Galena was second with 43 and Damonte took third with 54.

Munyon said he pulled away from the field about three-quarters of the way through the first lap. The course which winds around Bartley Ranch twice.

“It was a really good race, but it could have been better,” Munyon said. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Munyon, who finished third at state last year, said he heard from a few colleges, but has not decided where he will go yet.

“This is the best team race we’ve run all year,” Douglas coach Jay Frey said.

Damonte Ranch, which had seven runners in too 15, won the girls team title. With 30 points. Douglas was second with 61 and Galena took third with 66.

Moyer pulled away up the hill on the south side of Windy Hill on the first lap. On the second lap, she again extended her lead on the hill.

Although she was way ahead of the field in Friday’s race, she said she imagines that fellow runners are right behind her.

Moyer said having several strong runners on the Mustangs team pushes all the runners to go faster. She said the team sings rock songs from the 80s while running in practice.

Up next is the Reed meet at Shadow Mountain, which will be held on the re-designed course that will also be used for the Regional meet next month.
