New Albany volleyball rises to No. 7 in latest 4A coaches poll

Providence remains No. 1 in 3A, CAI No. 2 in 1A

New Albany, behind a 6-0 week and a win in its Ultra Ankle Challenge Saturday, moved five spots to No. 7 in the midseason Class 4A coaches poll released Monday.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs (18-2) fell behind 2-0 to 4A No. 11 Columbus East but rallied for a 3-2 win (23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-10) behind junior Allyson Cathey’s 34 kills. The Bulldogs then got revenge on Floyd Central at the Ultra Ankle Challenge final Saturday, winning 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) after the Highlanders — 4A’s No. 15 in Monday’s poll — topped New Albany at home last week.

New Albany also beat rival Jeffersonville twice, along with wins over 3A No. 16 Jasper and Columbus North.

Cathey was stellar for the Bulldogs last week. She totaled 53 kills, 18 kills and five blocks Saturday. Cathey boasts a .490 hitting percentage and 326 kills on the season – good for second and third in the state, respectively. The 6-foot-3 junior’s hitting percentage ranks fifth in the country.

Providence remained No. 1 in 3A by a vote. The Pioneers went 2-0 last week to extend their winning streak to 14 games and move to 18-3 overall.

Junior Marissa Hornung had 22 kills to lead Providence to a 3-1 win (21-25, 25-21, 26-24, 26-24) Thursday over Floyd Central. The Pioneers dropped the first set before rallying for the win, getting 45 assists from senior Lexie Libs, who ranks second in the state in assists with 617 on the season.

The thrilling four-set win over Floyd Central came after a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-4, 25-9) of Clarksville on Tuesday.

Junior Mia Swearingen had 24 kills against Providence in a losing effort for the Highlanders, who won a highly competitive minute-long rally at one point in the match. Floyd Central went 4-2 last week, which included a win over 3A then-No. 5 Silver Creek. The Dragons are tied for fifth in Monday’s poll.

Christian Academy, tied for No. 1 in last week’s poll, came in at No. 2 in the 1A rankings. The Warriors improved to 14-2 with a sweep of New Washington (25-2, 25-13, 25-7) Friday behind 15 aces from senior Mackenzie Haworth and 10 kills via senior Sierra Rayzor.
