No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) avenged the only loss the program has suffered in the last three seasons by beating No. 18 St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.), 35-14, in the Armour Bowl on Saturday night.
St. John’s won the 2014 meeting 35-2, handing the Ascenders their only loss that season, and IMG has not lost since.
The Ascenders’ offense continues to click behind Texas A&M quarterback commit Kellen Mond, who threw for 191 yards on 9-for-13 passing with three touchdowns. He also opened the scoring on a 49-yard run and finished with 81 yards on the ground.
IMG (4-0) opened the scoring on Mond’s run less than two minutes into the game and he hit Brian Hightower for a 65 yards pass midway through the opening quarter.
Before the quarter ended, St. John’s caught on the scoreboard as Kwincy Hall caught a 27-yard TD pass from Kasim Hill and the score was 14-7 at halftime.
IMG struck first in the second half with a 6-yard TD pass from Mond to Tre McKitty for a 21-7 lead. Hill answeed with a 4-yard TD run with 3:38 left in the third quarter, but St. John’s would get no closer.
Brock Annexstand caught 32-yard TD pass from Mond with 2:52 left in the third quarter and IMG capped the scoring when McKitty caught a 9-yard TD pass from Zack Annestad. McKitty finished with 81 yards receiving on four catches. Asa Martin had 80 yards rushing and 63 yards receiving.
The IMG defense continues to be strong, allowing 292 yards with 131 on the ground. Keilan Robinson had 101 yards rushing for the Cadets on 16 carries. Hill was 14-for-25 for 161 yards and threw for one touchdown. He ran for the other.
IMG defensive back Grant Delpit had an interception, his second of the season.
The Ascenders host Boyd Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) next Saturday. St. John’s (3-1) faces a challenge at home next Saturday from unbeaten Good Counsel (Olney, Md.).
