No. 6 McGill-Toolen (Ala.) survives brief scare to beat Baker

Brandon Hinton had three touchdown catches to lead No. 6 McGill-Toolen (Mobile, Ala.) to a 42-7 win Friday over Baker (Mobile).

The Yellow Jackets haven’t trailed very often this season, but when the Hornets took a 7-0 lead to start the game, McGill-Toolen quickly responded.

On the next series after Baker’s touchdown, Jackets quarterback Bubba Thompson engineered a 74-yard drive and Marlon Williams ran it in from the 2-yard line.

A few minutes later, a shanked punt by the Hornets gave the Jackets the ball at Baker’s 27, and a few plays later, Thompson threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Hinton and the Yellow Jackets led 14-7.

That was the halftime score as the Yellow Jackets had two first-half interceptions to end Baker drives, one by Trey Bendolph, the other by Ward Bronhold.

Thompson found Hinton again for a 4-yard touchdown pass to put the Jackets up 21-7 early in the third quarter. Hinton took a screen pass from Thompson 21 yards to put McGill-Toolen up 28-7 in the third quarter. Thompson also had a 16-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Trey Roberson had a 5-yard touchdown run to complete the scoring.

The Yellow Jackets (8-0) have won 17 in a row and play at Theodore next Friday. The Hornets (4-4) will play host to Foley on Friday.
