The Vikings made every defensive play they needed to, and it brought back a piece of hardware missing from the school for a long time.
Hunter Sullivan’s two-point conversion pass to Alexis Valenzuela put North Salem High School’s football team up with 3:13 left and the Vikings came up with three huge plays in the final 13 minutes to beat South Salem 23-22 and win the Mayor’s Trophy for the first time since 2006.
North Salem improves to 2-4 in the GVC while South Salem falls to 2-3 in the GVC and 2-4 overall with its third straight loss.
With South Salem leading 16-15 with :31 left in the third quarter, Saxon running back Francisco Ramirez-Perez had the ball stripped out of his hands, and North Salem’s Alex Vasquez recovered it at the Vikings’ 2-yard line.
The Vikings ate up nine minutes of clock until Vasquez ran for a seven-yard touchdown, and the two-point conversion put North Salem up 23-16 with 3:13 left.
On the ensuing drive Junior Sandoval wrestled an interception of Harrison Broadus out of the hands of South Salem’s Kyle Martz at the eight-yard line.
But on the net play, Vasquez fumbled the ball and South Salem’s Collin Voght recovered the ball on North Salem’s 4-yard line.
Ramirez-Perez ran for a touchdown on the next play to go up 23-22 with 1:52 left, and the Saxons went for two with Ramirez-Perez running it, but North Salem made the stop to seal the victory.
