North Salem's soccer team hosts program for disabled youths

North Salem High School’s boys soccer team begins its annual youth soccer program for youth with physical or mental challenges from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Salem Indoor Soccer Center.

The program runs Monday nights Oct. 17, 24 and 31 and Nov. 7, 14 and 21.

The program is free and registration is on site.

Football

Central senior Marlon Tuipulotu was presented his jersey Monday for being selected to play in the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in a ceremony at the school.

The game takes place at 9 a.m. Jan. 7, 2017 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Tuipulotu is the only Oregon player to be chosen to play in the game this year.

Along with Tuipulotu, Central coach Shane Hedrick has been invited to travel to San Antonio and attend the U.S. Army Coaches Academy during the week leading up to the game.

Basketball

South Salem High School’s boys basketball team has been chosen to play in the Les Schwab Invitational.

The tournament takes place Dec. 27 through 30 at Hillsboro’s Liberty High School.

Other Oregon teams entered in the tournament are West Linn, Jefferson, Beaverton, Central Catholic, Century, Churchill, Clackamas, Grant, Jesuit, Lake Oswego and Westview.

South Salem last played in the tournament in 2014.

Volleyball

McNary High School’s volleyball team will host a middle school/Boys & Girls Club poster night as part of the 6:30 p.m. match on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against McMinnville.

All middle school players in uniform or wearing their McNary volleyball camp shirt receive free admission to the match and the first 100 players receive a McNary volleyball poster.

McNary’s volleyball players will be available to sign posters after the match.

Club volleyball

The Factory Volleyball club will host a free skills clinic for athletes in the 12U and 14U age groups from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at South Salem High School.

Following the clinic there will be an all-club informational meeting for players and parents.

Tryouts for the club for 12U and 14U age ranges will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Nov. 6 at South Salem.

Tryouts for 15U and 16U will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at McNary High School. Tryouts for 17U and 18U will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 at McNary.

The Salem Sports & Breakfast Club honored Kaitlyn Paluska, Madison Willhoft, Tanner Sorensen and Noah Whitaker as athletes of the week at its Oct. 7 meeting.

Paluska, a senior midfielder for South Salem’s girls soccer team, scored a goal on a header off a corner kick and had an assist in a 2-1 win against Sprague.

Willhoft, a junior on North Salem’s cross country team, won the Champoeg Invitational for the second straight year and holds every cross country record at North Salem.

West Salem junior Noah Whitaker

Whiteaker, a junior running back and safety, rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries in a 56-6 win against North Salem.

Sorensen, a senior lineman for Sprague’s football team, helped the Olympians to a 53-7 win against Grants Pass.
