Pirates jump in 5A, Cocoa holds steady in state rankings

If Cocoa does indeed get to host Daytona Beach Mainland in a high school football game in the coming days, it will match a pair of No. 1 teams from this week’s Associated Press polls released Tuesday.

The Tigers, 3-1, held the No. 1 spot in Class 4A, while Mainland moved from second to first in 6A following a loss by previous No. 1 Miami Central. Neither were unanimous at the top. Cocoa got 12 of 15 No. 1 votes, while Mainland drew 14 of 18 in 6A.

The two are scheduled to meet Friday at Cocoa Stadium. As of Tuesday evening, it remained on the schedule, though the threat of Hurricane Matthew had already led one game to be postponed and another moved to Wednesday.

Storm forcing prep sports rescheduling

Cocoa was off last week, but defeated Viera, 17-7, in a lightning-shortened game on Sept. 23. The Hawks remained among teams receiving votes but not breaking the top 10 in Class 7A voting.

Palm Bay moved up another spot in the 5A poll after a 39-6 win over Titusville on Friday. The Pirates improved to 5-0 with that win, and they are scheduled to host Viera this week. Merritt Island, with three consecutive convincing victories, was included among teams getting votes in 5A, where Plantation American Heritage retained the top spot.

Class 6A Heritage and 3A Melbourne Central Catholic also drew votes from Florida sports writers, but neither cracked their top 10s. MCC could help its rankings cause on Friday when the Hustlers visit 3A No. 2 Lakeland Christian. Cambridge Christian, which played an incomplete game at Holy Trinity on Sept. 23, also due to weather, stayed at No. 1 in 2A.

The remaining No. 1 teams were Apopka in Class 8A, Oxbridge Academy in 3A and Madison County (1A).
