PORT CHARLOTTE — After 17 days of stewing over a 0-2 record, Cape Coral didn’t get the performance it hoped for with the opening of District 6A-10 play.
The Port Charlotte duo of Marc Jean-Louis and Ernest Harvey combined for 371 total yards and four touchdowns in a 56-0 rout of the Seahawks on Monday at Pirate’s Cove.
The Pirates piled up 389 yards of offense en route to a 35-0 lead in the first half to improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in district play. Meanwhile, the Seahawks (0-3, 0-1), who played undefeated South Fort Myers tough Sept. 2, weren’t able to get anything going all night.
“I don’t even have a clue about this team showing up tonight,” a frustrated Cape coach Larry Gary said. “This is not Cape Coral High School Seahawks football. This is by far the worst display of football since I’ve been here. I’ve never seen it so bad.”
The game was postponed Friday after Charlotte County Superintendent of Schools Steve Dionisio received a call from the Cape Coral Police Department regarding the threat of violence at the game, Charlotte County School District spokesperson Mike Riley said. An altercation prior to Cape Coral’s arrival in Port Charlotte between Seahawks players and Cape students had authorities concerned about it spilling over to the game.
All Cape administrators and athletic staff were in attendance Monday as supervisory and security precautions, Lee County School District spokesperson Lauren Stillwell said.
The Pirates, the district runner-up last season, made a habit of hitting the big play early. Harvey, who had 75 yards rushing and 124 yards receiving, caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Paul Barnes for the only score of the first quarter and then his 72-yard run for a score was a part of a 28-point second quarter.
Jean-Louis (127 yards rushing, 45 yards receiving) also caught a touchdown pass from Barnes and had a 58-yard dash to the end zone.
Barnes finished 6-for-7 passing for 181 yards and three touchdowns.
The game went to a running clock in the second half.
On three days rest, Cape hits the road for a non-district matchup with Cypress Lake on Friday. Port Charlotte hosts Sarasota Booker.
