Rader takes fifth, Tracy reaches quarterfinals in tennis championships

Anna Rader of Springfield Catholic took fifth place in the Class 1 singles tournament and Kickapoo High’s Coral Tracy reached the quarterfinals of the Class 2 singles tournament at the 41st MSHSAA Girls Tennis Championships on Saturday at Cooper Tennis Complex.

Rader defeated Hanna Zethraeus (KC Center) 7-6, 6-1 in the opening round on Friday. Rader dropped the quarterfinal match to Samantha Remis (John Burroughs) 7-5, 6-4 but defeated Katie Varner (St. Charles West), Maria Brandt (Incarnate Word), and Hanna Zethraeus again to capture fifth place overall.

Tracy topped Janel Dean (Parkway North) 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of the Class 2 singles tournament, but fell in the quarterfinals to Mary Burger (St. Joseph’s Academy) 6-1, 6-2. Tracy then defeated Brooke Smith (Glendale) 7-6 (3), 6-4 to advance to the consolation semi-final round. Tracy’s excellent season ended in the seventh-place match with a loss to Ella Kinder (Rockwood Summit).

The girls tennis state tournaments capped successful seasons for several area high schools. Springfield Catholic entered the Class 1 team tournament undefeated; the Irish beat Rogersville and Nevada before falling to Barstow in the semi-finals. Central and Glendale met in the second round of the Class 2 team tournament after opening round wins over Joplin and Jefferson City, respectively. Central dropped Glendale 5-2, but the Bulldogs fell in the semi-finals to Lee’s Summit West.
