Rockhurst (Mo.) takes over No. 1, 9 newcomers in Super 25 boys soccer rankings

Rockhurst (Kansas City) is the new No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports/National Soccer Coaches Association Super 25 for fall boys soccer.

Rockhurst, which has been No. 3, takes the top spot away from St. Benedict’s (Newark, N.J.), which lost for the first time in 36 games over the weekend. The Berkshire School (Sheffield, Mass.) down St. Ben’s 2-1 with the winning goal coming in the final two minutes.

Rockhurst has been adding victories in tournament play, winning the Top Dawg event at Blue Valley last weekend and the Blue Springs South Tournament the previous weekend. The team heads to the Regis Jesuit Classic in Colorado on Sept. 23-24 and will face No. 5 Marquette (Milwaukee).

St. Ignatius (Cleveland) remains in the No. 2 spot with a 6-0-1 start. St. Benedict’s is No. 3. St. Ignatius and St. Benedict’s shared the Super 25 title last fall.

McMinnville (Ore.) leaped from No. 13 to No. 4 this week and is off to a 5-0 start.

Chaminade (Mineola, N.Y.) also surged from No. 14 to No. 7.

The highest ranked among the nine newcomers is Brentwood (N.Y.) at No. 13. The other new faces: No. 15 George Washington (Charlestown, W.Va.), No. 16 Galstonbury (Conn.), No. 19 Saratoga (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), No. 20 Morton (Cicero, Ill.), No. 21 Fort Meade (Md.), No. 22 Portage (Mich.) Northern, No. 23 Cleveland (Rio Ranch, N.M.) and No. 24 La Salle Academy (Providence, R.I.).
