The No. 2 Fossil Ridge volleyball team won a wild first set and then controlled the next two en route to a sweep (34-32, 25-19, 25-15) of city rival Rocky Mountain on Thursday night.
Riley Zuhn led the SaberCats’ attack with 14 kills, and Catie Semadeni followed behind her with 11 in a match that Fossil Ridge coach Paul Shimek said was, “just the way you want to see a crosstown rivalry go with two teams going hard at each other with great points and great rallies.”
The SaberCats (9-1, 4-0 FRL) set up hitters with effective passing. Brynn Montgomery had 23 assists and Tyler Lindgren dished out 16.
Kaylee Kopp led the Lobos with 11 kills and Alie McEndaffer had eight kills to go along with 10 digs for the Lobos (6-5, 1-3 FRL).
LOVELAND 3, POUDRE 0 — The Impalas were swept by Loveland (25-13, 25-13, 25-17). Poudre will be at Legend in their next match on Tuesday.
HERITAGE CHRISTIAN 3, UNION COLONY 0 — The Eagles fell behind 10 points in the first set before rallying to sweep Union Colony (25-19, 25-23, 25-11). Jacqueline Flynt buried 15 kills and had seven service aces. Sarah McGinley stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 12 kills, seven blocks and five aces.
FORT COLLINS 3, GREELEY WEST 0 — The Lambkins secured their sixth victory of the season with a sweep (25-17, 25-11, 25-15) over Greeley West. Sabrina Vandelist did a little bit of everything, finishing with 21 assists, seven digs and five service aces. Trinty Corny had nine kills and two blocks while only committing one attack error. Sofia Boyer notched seven kills and three blocks while also committing only a single error.
HOLY FAMILY 3, WINDSOR 0 — The Wizards (4-6, 2-3 Tri-Valley) were swept by Holy Family on the road. Madi Bruen and Karlie Sorenson led the Wizards with seven kills each.
FORT COLLINS 2, MOUNTAIN RANGE 0 — The No. 10 Lambkins used two first-half goals to shutout Mountain Range. Alec Fronapfel and Eric Thompson both scored for Fort Collins (4-1-2, 3-1 FRL).
LIBERTY COMMON 3, VALLEY 2 — The Eagles picked up their first league win on the road over Valley. Evan Walter had one goal and one assist. Ryan Zonnefeld and Paul Boehner also scored for Liberty (3-3-1, 1-1 Patriot). Zach Harker added an assist as the Eagles were able to dominate possession.
HORIZON 4, FOSSIL RIDGE 3 — Fossil Ridge (4-3, 4-1 FRL) fell to Horizon. After trailing 2-1 at half, the Hawks were able to score twice more in the second half to get the win over the SaberCats.
BOULDER 5, ROCKY MOUNTAIN 0 — The Lobos were shut out at home by the state’s top-ranked team.
FOSSIL RIDGE 10, GREELEY WEST 0 — No. 2 Fossil Ridge blanked Greeley West on the road Thursday as the SaberCats bounced back from a 5-0 loss to Broomfield on Tuesday. Mia Moddelmog went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs while Grace Philop and Rheanna Will had two his apiece for the SaberCats (11-2, 5-2 FRL).
FORT COLLINS 8, LOVELAND 7 — Hana Mawlawi hit a sharp single to deliver the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh as Fort Collins (8-5, 5-1 FRL) beat Loveland in a nail-biter. Prior to Mawlawi’s game-winner, Mason Togher hit a single to tie the game at seven. Ciana Curran hit a home run and drove in two runs while also striking out nine batters in the circle. Rachel Jones went 2-for-3 with a double. The Lambkins next play No. 2 Fossil Ridge on Saturday.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 4, POUDRE 3 — Rocky Mountain narrowly beat Poudre, even though the Impalas (5-6, 1-5 FRL) outhit the Lobos (11-3, 5-2 FRL). Jennah Thompson had two hits for the Lobos and Kelli Schueler pitched seven innings and only allowed three runs to earn the victory. Ariana Cordova had two hits and drove in two runs for Poudre.
FOSSIL RIDGE 7, FORT COLLINS 0 — The SaberCats won all seven positions in straight sets to defeat crosstown rival Fort Collins. Jackson Holland won at No. 1 singles. Arjun and Ahkil Gupta both picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The doubles teams of Tim Sunset/Charlie Johnson (No. 1), Drew Schneider/Evan Diehl (No. 2), Aaron Hargis/Cameron Salz (No. 3) and Brandon Krzyzkowski/Tyler Li (No. 4) all won in two sets for Fossil Ridge.
WINDSOR 7, FREDERICK 0 — Windsor swept Frederick on Thursday with two-set wins at all seven spots. Ellis Johnson (No. 1), Michael Gueswell (No. 2), and Wesley Smith (No. 3) all dominated the three singles spots for the Wizards. The doubles duos of Max McManigal/Blake Pendleton (No. 1), Andrew Fischer/Kieran Joe (No. 2), Kenneth Blake/Peyton Shewmon (No. 3) and Preston Earle/Kaden Henry (No. 4) all defeated their opponents in straight sets as well.
