It may not have been the prettiest victory. Yet it was still enough to send the Our Lady of Lourdes High School football team to the Section 1 playoffs.
In a qualifier against visiting Walter Panas on Friday, the Warriors won 7-0, giving them a chance to defend their Class A title.
“It was a hard-fought win,” Lourdes coach Brian Walsh said. “I was proud of the kids, the way they hung in there and competed. Especially at the end of the game.”
Scoreless up until the fourth quarter, Joe Scaglione broke it open on a touchdown carry from five yards out. Before Scaglione scored the winning touchdown, the Panthers were penalized for roughing the punter. Following the penalty, Sean McDowell rushed for 10 yards and then Scaglione ran for 13 more to help set up the score.
Scaglione finished with 126 yards on 24 carries.
Panas drove to Lourdes’ 3-yard line on the ensuing possession, but Scaglione made a tackle to force a turnover on downs.
“It was close right up until the end,” Walsh said. “(Walter Panas) was tough. Their quarterback was a very good runner. We made some big stops on defense.”
The Warriors (5-2) will visit Somers for the first round of the playoffs.
“They’re a very good team,” Walsh said of the Tuskers. “They have a nice balance between running and passing. It’s going to be a tough game and we certainly have to play a lot better than we did (Friday).”
