We are in the age of the one-handed catch, it would appear.
The latest entry in the “Wait, did he catch that?!” sweepstakes comes from Fayetteville (Ark.) High School senior wide receiver Barrett Banister. Watch the first clip above to see his slick one-handed grab in the back of the end zone during Friday night’s 48-17 win over Rogers Heritage High School.
Here is the play in slow motion from a sideline angle.
Proving there is no justice in the world, however, the play was called back.
No matter that the touchdown did not stand for reasons unknown to this write (Did he not have complete control? Was the quarterback past the line of scrimmage when he made the throw?) Of course, that minor technicality didn’t stop Tarver from keeping it at “catch of the year status” the day after the game.
Banister went on to have nine catches for 114 yards and two TDs in the game, upping his season totals to 53 receptions for 590 yards and 11 TDs.
While the catch may not have made it into the box score or the season’s stats, it leaves a visual impression that no box score can illustrate. One-handed grabs – they never get old.
