Thanksgiving Day rivalry games are a big deal in Massachusetts, in case you missed the memo. And they don’t come any older than the face off between Woburn and Winchester, neighboring towns in Boston’s northwestern suburbs. The 118th meeting between the two teams came with some extra drama, as it served as the final contest of longtime Woburn head football coach Rocky Nelson’s career.
Fittingly for a coach of 31 years and Woburn High alum himself, Nelson left absolutely nothing back in his final pregame speech to his team, as you can see from the video above, which was captured by the Boston Herald’s Steve Buckley.
Boston.com editor John Waller transcribed the speech, which was as straightforward and terrific as you could imagine.
“The first thing I want to remind you: This is not about me, this is about you!” the retiring Nelson began.
“Play with great pride, great Woburn hearts,” he shouted. “Overcome adversity, cause there will be. Together. Find a way. You deserve it.”
Now that is a speech worthy of a 22-21 nail-biter of a rivalry game.
