Lessons come in many forms. If you forget your phone charger at home one day, you likely won’t the next. You’re stung by bees after hitting that hive with a broom – next time, new tactic.
For Stafford (Texas) High School senior Hezekiah Jones, the No. 18 wide receiver in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite, the lesson he likely learned on Friday vs. Navasota was “Don’t look back.”
After catching a punt, Jones put on a couple of jukes that have helped make him one of the nation’s top recruits. Once in the clear, he decided to admire his work a bit. That’s when Navasota’s Elidrick Powell taught his own lesson in not giving up on a play, coming out of the proverbial nowhere to knock Jones out of bounds before he could collect six.
Stafford did win the contest, 51-6. Regardless of score, there is what coaches call “a teachable moment” for both sides in that one piece of video.
It’s a good play for Jones to get out of his system before he heads to College Station to play for Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies. Of course, his recruitment isn’t complete. Jones (a former Baylor commit) paid a visit to Notre Dame this weekend.
Looks like Jones has his eyes on what’s ahead rather than the rear view. A lesson likely learned.
