Week 8: Cocoa 41, Jones 6

COCOA Maybe it was rust from not playing for three weeks, or maybe it was just an Orlando Jones team determined to make this year the one.

Whatever it was, Cocoa High needed about a quarter of football to get its offense going on Friday before it erupted for a 41-6 win.

The game all but guaranteed the home Tigers of a playoff spot, though there is little question Cocoa (4-1) was headed that way as the No. 1 team in Class 4A. At 2-0, Cocoa is the only team in 5-4A without a district loss.

Both Javian Hawkins and Lasedrick King surpassed 100 yards of rushing. In fact, both hit 118 and did so largely with explosive gains. Among Hawkins’ 10 carries were 35- and 63-yarders. The latter ended in the end zone and gave the Tigers a 17-0 lead 1:48 before halftime.

Timmy Pratt, who scored on a 4-yarder and set up a 1-yard Bruce Judson run with a 31-yard gain in the third, made his debut on defense and also finished with 72 yards on seven runs.

“They started off really good,” he said of Jones. “The defensive end was crashing inside. Once he started to shift out is when we started to get the majority of our yards.”

Of Cocoa’s 412 yards of offense, 405 of it came on the ground.

Visiting quarterback Quadry Jones connected on passes of 14 and 18 yards on his first drive, but Cocoa shut that down for most of the game and allowed just 137 yards.

Cocoa defenders stalked Jones much of the night but only managed to drop him for losses three times. A bull rush by Howard Stewart created the biggest, a 29-yard sack.

“I was just trying to chase him enough to where my players could come and get him,” Stewart said. “We didn’t watch too much film. We were just pretty much going with the flow.”

Jones dropped to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in 5-4A.
