Week 8: Eau Gallie 31, Jensen Beach 28

Jensen Beach visited Eau Gallie on Friday night.

Jensen Beach visited Eau Gallie on Friday night.

The Eau Gallie Commodores defeated the Jensen Beach Falcons in a District 6, Class 7A matchup Friday night, overcoming a large first-half deficit to improve to 4-2.

Eau Gallie quarterback Jack Gallo threw 33 passes for 241 yards, including a 72-yard pass late in third quarter to Cordell Dzara to give the Commodores a 24-21 lead after being down 21-6 in the first half.

It was smooth sailing for the Commodores earlier on after a Kyle Lewis interception set up a one-yard touchdown run by Gallo, but Jensen Beach struck back quickly with a touchdown by Hunter East on the ensuing drive, erasing what would be Eau Gallie’s only lead of the night.

Keeping Eau Gallie buried deep in their own territory for much of the second quarter, Jensen Beach added two more touchdowns to their total, one coming on a 40-yard punt return by Jamien Sheerwood and the other on a one-yard run by Connor Phillips.

A 37-yard field goal by Matt Stephens sent the Commodores into the half, trailing 21-9.

Eau Gallie found new life coming out of the half, as Gallo was able to hit multiple receivers in route to an 80-yard touchdown drive capped off with a one yard run by Keith Headd.

Dzara’s 72-yard catch and run seemed to complete the Commodores comeback, however Jensen Beach matched the home team one more time with Jalen Gregory catching a screen pass in the flat and blazing down the sideline for the 91-yard, go-ahead score to put the Falcons on top, 28-24 with 8:26 left in the game.

That proved to be more than enough time for the Commodores as Eau Gallie, with a healthy mix of run and pass, orchestrated one final touchdown drive ending with a 10-yard run by Keith Headd in the game’s final minutes.

Eau Gallie will host Holy Trinity Monday in a makeup game from Week 7, then will play at Okeechobee next Friday, while Jensen Beach (3-3) will travel to Heritage.
