The Grand Ledge football team has secured its spot in the playoffs.
Now the Comets are in pursuit of an outright CAAC Blue title.
Grand Ledge has a chance to accomplish that next week when it travels to East Lansing in what will be a battle for first place in the CAAC Blue. The contest highlights the games taking place involving Lansing area teams in Week 8.
The Comets (6-1, 5-0 CAAC Blue) have won six straight since a season-opening loss to Hudsonville and can secure the outright conference title for a second straight season with a win over the Trojans.
East Lansing (5-2, 4-1) will try to prevent that from happening and give itself a chance to earn at least a share of the title.
“I think this is what every team wants at this juncture of the year,” said East Lansing coach Bill Feraco, whose team has won four straight to set up next week’s big game. “This is what it’s about and this is why you work in the winter and why you work in the summer. Now it’s right here. The stakes get a little higher next week.”
The Trojans are playing for more than a shot at a league title. East Lansing can secure an automatic berth in the state playoffs by winning just one of its final two regular-season games. The Trojans haven’t made the playoffs since 2012.
The East Lansing-Grand Ledge contest is far from the only big game involving teams in the Lansing area.DeWitt (6-1), which wrapped up the outright CAAC Blue title Friday, hosts Division 5 power Menominee (7-0) in a matchup of state-ranked teams. Menominee, which is ranked No. 2 in Division 5, won a close matchup at home between the teams last fall.
Other intriguing matchups include Everett (2-5) at Sexton (4-3) in a matchup of city schools, Fowlerville (5-2) at Corunna (6-1) and Bath (4-3) at Laingsburg (6-1).
Fowler, Fowlerville, Olivet and Webberville can clinch playoff berths with wins in Week 8.
