West Washington remains unbeaten with rout of Salem

CAMPBELLSBURG, Ind. — For the first time in school history, West Washington completed back-to-back undefeated regular-season campaigns after a 44-23 thumping of county rival Salem Friday night.

“These guys have left their mark,” said West Washington coach Phillip Bowsman. “They have put a stamp on this program. Going undefeated back-to-back — that’s a tall task.”

The Senators (9-0) next will face Oldenburg Academy in the first round of the Class 1A sectional next Friday.

In the first half, West Washington breezed to a 30-16 cushion by forcing Salem to kick three field goals.

Salem’s placekicker Jacob Thompson converted on kicks of 32, 33 and 37 yards.

The Senators scored four TDs as quarterback Michael Sizemore threw scoring passes to Noah Green (42 yards) and Hunter Sanford (10 yards), and backs Landon McPheeters and Eamonn Tragessor scored on short runs

“At halftime, we said if we’re trading field goals for touchdowns, we’re going to win the game,” Bowsman said. “We convinced our kids that a field goal is a win on a drive. Sometimes that’s tough but we did.”

In the second half, Salem marched down the field to start the third quarter, as quarterback Seth Hobson scored on a one-yard plunge to cut the deficit to 30-23 with 5:22 left in the third. The Lions (5-4) didn’t score again.

Then McPheeters, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound running back, scored the last two TDs of the game on runs of 1 and 9 yards.

“There’s a lot of leadership on this team,” McPheeters said. “It’s not just the upperclassmen.”

“He runs hard and we’ve got great guys around him,” Bowsman said. “Our wide receivers tonight. … They were huge. They played like men tonight. That was the difference.”
