Avon boys, Warren Central girls win indoor track titles

Junior sprinter Isaac Guerendo led Avon to the large-school boys team championship in the Hoosier State Relays at Bloomington.

In what has become the unofficial state indoor track and field meet, Warren Central repeated as girls large-school champion Saturday at Indiana University’s Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Schools were divided as 4A-6A and 1A-3A.

Guerendo won the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, ½ inch, finished second in the 60-meter dash in 6.87 seconds and ran on Avon’s winning 800-meter relay team. Avon also won the 1,600 relay in 3:23.35.

The Orioles scored 78 points. Fort Wayne Carroll was second with 48 and Westfield third with 37.

Also in the boys meet, Gabe Fendel won the 3,200 in 9:15.19 and anchored Hamilton Southeastern to victory in the distance medley relay. Whiteland’s Ryder Emberton won the shot put at 57-7 ½.

Warren Central’s girls scored 74 points. Zionsville and Noblesville tied for second with 48 each.

Meet records were set by Warren Central’s Kayland Jackson, 8.58 in the 60 hurdles, and Zionsville’s Katie Isenbarger, 5-10 in the high jump. Ben Davis’ Kyara Simmons edged Warren Central’s Mikeisha Covington in the 60 meters, 7.57 to 7.58.

Brebeuf Jesuit won the girls small-school title with 101 points. West Lafayette was second with 59 and Guerin Catholic third with 55.

Brebeuf sophomore Semira Killebrew broke her own meet record to win the 60 in 7.51. Nakita Turner, also of Brebeuf, won the 60 hurdles in 8.91. Killebrew and Turner also ran on a winning 800 relay team.

Fort Wayne Concordia was boys small-school champion with 100 points.
