With two individual victories from junior standout swimmer Desiree Lewis, the Xavier Prep girls’ swimming team defeated La Quinta 94-76 in a tight league match Thursday night with Desert Valley League title implications. Lewis won both the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, while Jillian Barbato won the 50 freestyle, Jackie Cordero won the 100 butterfly, Emma Johansen took home the 100 backstroke and Ariel Forehand won the 100 breaststroke.
Johansen, Cordero, Lewis and Forehand together won the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
The boys’ Saints team lost to La Quinta 104-66, but Robert Wood (200 freestyle) and Kole Dempster (500 freestyle) picked up victories.
Track and field
Indio: The Rajahs competed over the weekend at the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions with several standout performances on the day. Aaron Perez took first in his heat of the 3200 meters in 10:11.87, followed closely by Julian Dorantes-Lara in 10:19.14. In the 1600, Luis Contreras took second in his heat in 5:03.50, while Jose Fausto finished 12th in his heat at 5:00.14.
In the invitational 800, Jose Morales finished 10th in 1:59.58. Senior Marisa Rodriguez finished fourth in the rated 1600 girls race in 5:02.39 and beat the previous school record set by Rebecca Morales in 2012 of 5:08.30. Victor Urbina also laid down an impressive time in the freshman/sophomore 3200 invitational race with a ninth place finish at 9:39.88.
Shadow Hills 4, Sam Barlow (Ore.) 1: The Knights’ starting pitcher Kyle Moe threw five innings for Shadow Hills Wednesday night, earning a victory in a non-league game against a team from Portland, Ore. with two strikeouts and three hits allowed.
At the plate, Kevin Morden and Christian Wisler both picked up two hits and each scored a run. The Knights (9-2, 2-1) play next at home Friday at 3:15 p.m. against Palm Springs.
Xavier Prep 6, Indio 1: Saints pitcher Ben Wysard threw 5.1 innings Thursday night, striking out four batters while allowing just one earned run and three hits in his victory. Wysard also led the offense at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two stolen bases and one RBI, while Joey Perricone was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Rancho Mirage 258, Desert Mirage 308: The Rattlers survived windy conditions at Indian Palms Country Club, led by Maurico Alvarez’s 47. Benny Leung’s 51, Brandon Gonzalez’s 52 and 54’s from Marcus Lopez and Gilden Rodas helped clinch the win.
In the loss, Desert Mirage was led by Emmanuel Zepeda’s 55, along with a 57 from Ignacio Ramirez and a 61 from Andreas Chavez.
