The Palm Springs Indians girls’ basketball team won an overtime thriller, 49-43 over Saddleback of Santa Ana in the “SoCal Run n Gun Against Cancer” tournament at Rancho Buena Vista High School.
Jamiah Hall led Palm Springs with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Tzipporah Page added 12 points and 12 rebounds with three steals.
Dajae Session and Nakia Massengale combined for 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
Palm Springs is 2-1 the Desert Valley league and 9-5 overall. The Indians host Indio Wednesday.
Palm Desert in Clovis tournament: The Aztecs’ Anthony Mantanona won the 170-pound division of the prestigious Doc Buchanan Invitational at Clovis High School in Clovis. Mantanona pinned Clovis’ Victor Vargas in the finals in 2:16.
Four Aztecs placed place at the Riverside County Championships tournament at Arlington High School in Riverside. Eric Santana (120 pounds), Cameron VanDyke (182 pounds) and Gabe Herrera (285 pounds) all finished in second place. Chase Overgaag (113 pounds) finished in fourth place.
The Aztecs will wrestle again Thursday as they host the Palm Springs Indians in a league match.
La Quinta in Riverside event: Three Blackhawks put in strong performances in the Riverside Country Championship.
Marcus Lopez was third in the 132-pound division, Kyle Whitefield was fifth in the 170-pound division and Travis Obrien was fourth in the 285-pound division.
La Quinta 4, California (Whittier) 1: The Blackhawks won the non-league home game to improve to 8-2-4 overall.
Tatiana Woodworth scored two goals for La Quinta, while Lexi Mejia and Jaylene Manion each scored one goal. Assists came from Kayleen Sullivan, Hannah Mendoza, and Monica Calderon.
La Quinta (1-0-1 in Desert Valley league play) will return to DVL action Wednesday at Cathedral City.
Cathedral City 6, Indio 0: Senior captains Sam Toriche and Miyah Coleman led the Lions to the victory over the Rajahs.
Coleman had two goals while Toriche completed 90 percent of her passes in the match.
Azalea Guanajuato, Davonna Shahar and Dalaina Johnson also scored for Cathedral City and had two assists, while Hannah Manjarrez, Alejandra Fernandez and Leslie Morales added an assist.
The Lions are now 3-1 in the Desert Valley League and 11-7-1 overall.
