The Palm Desert softball team stepped out of the conference to pull off an impressive doubleheader sweep over Woodbridge High School on Saturday.
The Aztecs won the opener against the team from Orange County 7-3 and won the second game 4-3 in walk-off fashion.
In Game 1, the Aztecs got seven strong innings from Trinity Villa and two hits and two RBIs from both Jamiana Gateb and Sydney Sprinkle. Karli Manney added two runs scored.
In Game 2 it was Sprinkle with a 4-for-4 game that included three doubles. Shawna Aguerrebere was 2 for 3 with a run scored. The Aztecs (9-2) walked off with the win on a ground ball from Bayley Gonzalez and some heads-up baserunning by Gateb who scored from second on the play. Carly Williams went seven strong innings for the win.
La Quinta 8, Shadow Hills 1: The Blackhawks rebounded after losing their opener with a thorough defeat of the Knights. Havanna Zanesco had three hits to lead the offensive attack. Jasmine Perezchica and Lauren Robinson each had two hits for La Quinta. Yasmin Nix got the victory, striking out five, while yielding three hits.
La Quinta (11-2, 1-1) plays Friday against Xavier Prep.
Track and field
La Quinta at the Mt. Carmel Invite: The Blackhawks had five individual medalists in a fine effort on Saturday. On the girls’ side, the 400-meter relay team of Shekinah Edwards, Aven LaMere, Emma Rosillo and Alana Wilson took first place in 50.64 seconds, and the same quartet also took second in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:06.27.
The speedster LaMere also took first in the 100 meters in 12.73, and Wilson was third in the 200 meters in 27.07 seconds. Katelyn Jackson took second with a high jump of 5-feet.
On the boys’ side, Isaiah Villalpondo won the 800 meters in 2:00.57. The 400 relay team took third in 45.80. Adam Kasten took sixth in the long jump in 22-feet, 1-inch.
La Quinta (3-0, 2-0) hosts Xavier Prep at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.
San Bernardino 12, COD 2: The Roadrunners dropped a home game to fall to 5-4 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. COD (7-18, 5-4) was led by Jason Nall and Quinton Bidon who each had an RBI. Dominic Velasquez had a steal. Blake Garcia took the loss on the mound.
