Roundup: Schinke scores 17 but Aztec girls fall 42-34

Alexis Legan added seven for Palm Desert, while Casey Goguts scored five points and Ezoghie Igbinedion added three points, with Marisa Givens scoring two points.

Palm Desert, 6-9 overall and 1-0 in the DVL, returns to league action Jan. 11 against Shadow Hills.

Cathedral City 60, Indio 27: Tatiana Witherspoon scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals as the Lions earned the Desert Valley League win.

Ley Broom scored 17 points and had five steals for Cathedral City, while Nina Wallace had 13 points and seven assists.

Cathedral City is now 9-4 overall and 1-2 in DVL play.

Boys’ basketball

Rancho Mirage 72, Brawley 60: Charles Neal led the Rattlers in the non-league win with 19 points and nine assists.

Bryan Talley added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Rancho Mirage, with Zack Kroker adding 12 points and three steals. Chris Albert had 12 points and six rebounds.

Rancho Mirage is 14-2 and begins De Anza League play Tuesday at Desert Hot Springs.

Indio 66, Cathedral City 61:  Kavonte Kinney scored 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Lions fell to Indio in Desert Valley League game.

Timothy Miller had 13 and seven rebounds for Cathedral City, while Isaiah Ross had five points and 10 rebounds.

Christian Briceno with 21 points and Jeremiah Brown with 20 led the victorious Rajahs, while Israel Hernandez added 11 points.

Indio is now 10-8 overall, including 3-0 in the DVL. Indio next plays at home against Palm Springs Wednesday.

West Shore 59, Palm Valley 55: The shorthanded Firebirds came up short in the game in which they were missing five players.

Michael Ma led Palm Valley with 25 points and nine rebounds, with Ben Snyder adding 12 points and seven rebounds.

Palm Valley continues league play Tuesday at Bloomington Christian.

Boys’ wrestling

Rancho Mirage in Riverside event: The Rattlers moved into seventh place in the first day of the 35th annual Riverside County wrestling championships at Arlington High School.

Four Rattler wrestlers, Marcus Lopez (132), Miguel Roman (160), Kyle Whitefield (170) and Travis Obrien (285) all advanced to the championship quarterfinals. Other Rancho Mirage wrestlers in the consolation bracket are Kurt Tan (113) and Edward Palomo (220).

Action in event continues Saturday at 9 a.m.

Boys’ soccer

Palm Springs 2, Shadow Hills 1: The Indians scored late in the first half and once in extra time to earn the Desert Valley League home victory.

Oton Fernandez scored in the 68th minute with an assisted by Tomas Medina. In extra time, Medina scored the winning goal, assisted by Raul Morado.

Shadow Hills’ goal came in the 48th minute of the game.

Jayden Thomas had six saves for Palm Springs.

Palm Springs is now 2-0 in league and 5-5-3 overall.

Girls’ soccer

Shadow Hills 6, Palm Springs 0: The Knights scored four goals in the first half including three from Mason Stansberry on the way to the DVL win.

Shadow Hills also had a first-half goal from Liz Quezada. In the second half Quezada added another goal and Alyssa Felix scored the final goal of the game.

Midfielder Maria Gonzalez added two assists for Shadow Hills.

College women’s basketball

San Diego City 76, College of the Desert 47: The Roadrunners fell into a hole in the first quarter and never recovered in falling to 2-13 on the season.

Jerrica Perez led College of the Desert with 19 points, while Mercades Young added 11 points and Lexie Jackson scored seven.

College of the Desert’s next home game is Jan. 11 against Imperial Valley.
