Location: Santa Ana, Calif.
17-18 Record: 16-0
Final Super 25 Rank: 1

Why them: The Monarchs will be hard-pressed to be as good as last season, when they finished the year unbeaten and as the Super 25 champion.

However, there’s plenty of talent there, and they’re already getting some key transfers, led by junior QB Bryce Young, who threw 3,431 yards and 41 touchdowns and rushed for 287 yards and eight TDs last season as a sophomore at Cathedral (Los Angeles).

Mater Dei also landed two elite prospects from Rancho Cucamonga: Sean Dollars (919 yards and 16 TDs rushing), the No. 1-ranked all-purpose RB, and senior WR-CB Jeremiah Criddell.

WR Braedin Huffman-Dixon, who transferred from Roosevelt (Eastvale), is a Colorado commit. Young will have a mostly intact offensive line to throw behind and the Monarchs also returns senior RB Shakobe Parker (999 yards and 15 TDs rushing).

Young’s primary targets are likely to be senior WR Bru McCoy (770 yards and 11 TDs receiving) and Huffman-Dixon.

The defense also returns two Oregon commits in LB Mase Funa and DT Keyon Ware-Hudson.
