The top returnees are senior 5-10 W Brinae Alexander (12.5 ppg, 6.5), who signed with Vanderbilt, senior 5-11 W Alexis Whittington (11.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.4 apg), a Middle Tennessee signee, and her sister, senior 5-11 F Amanda Whittington (6.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg). Alasia Hayes, Anastasia’s younger sister, averaged 9.2 points and 3.4 rebounds as a 5-8 freshman PG last season.

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: 2. The Cadets won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and District of Columbia State Athletic Association titles and return two starters in senior 6-0 G Sydney Wood (10.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.0 spg), a Northwestern signee and junior 6-3 C Malu Tshitenge-Mutombo. Other key returnees include senior G Asha Scott, who signed with Vermont, 5-10 senior G Jaylin Carodine, who signed with James Madison and senior PG Carly Rivera. Keep an eye out for Azzi Fudd, a 5-10 freshman who played for the USA Basketball U16 team and already has major offers.

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: 10. The Pantherettes won the 6A state title, their fourth in the past six seasons. They are well situated for another title run with three starters returning, led by senior 6-0 G Zarielle Green (17.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.4 apg) who has signed with Tennessee. Senior 6-0 F Starr Jacobs (12.7 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 2.1 apg), a Houston signee and senior 5-8 G Aniya Thomas (7.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.7 apg), a Kansas signee, also return. Howard signee Krislyn Marsh (5.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg), a 6-0 guard, Eastern New Mexico signee Asha Ross, a 5-10 SF, and 6-5 sophomore C Hannah Gusters (6.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg) are also key players.

Mercer County

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: Unranked. The Titans won the state championship and return a full house. Start with 5-9 senior G Seygan Robins (16.5 ppg, 4.6 apg, 3.1 rpg and 2.1 spg), who signed with Louisville. Senior 6-2 F Emmy Souder (12 ppg) has signed with Northern Kentucky. Senior 5-10 F Faith Lake (10 ppg) and senior 5-8 G Lexy Lake (11 ppg) are headed to Campbellsville and senior 5-10 F Emma Davis (9 ppg) has signed with Tennessee-Martin. Keep an eye on sophomore 5-10 F Channing Lewis and 5-8 junior G Toni McCombs, who was the leading scorer last season at Knox Central (Barbourville).

Hamilton Heights Christian Academy

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: 15. The Hawks were the National Association of Christian Athletes and USA Prep champions and the runners-up in the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Nationals. They feature a team full of Division I talent, led by 6-1 W Elizabeth Balogun (14.6 ppg 5.0 rpg, 2.7 bpg), who signed with Georgia Tech, and 6-1 PG Jazmine Massengill (10.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg ,7.0 apg), who signed with Tennessee. They also have two super sophomores in 6-0 G Treasure Hunt (12.9 ppg, 3.0 apg) and 6-7 C Kamilla Cardosa (8.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg). The top newcomer is senior 5-6 PG Marta Rodriguez, who played on the Portuguese U18 National Team.

Saint Mary's-Stockton

Stockton, CA 21 - 9 - 0

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: Unranked. The return of senior 6-2 F Aquira DeCosta, who has signed with Baylor, along with two other Division I signees, makes the Rams a state title contender. DeCosta (18 ppg, 12.5 rpg) missed a month of last season with a knee injury. Senior 5-9 PG Ariel Johnson (15.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 4.0 apg and 3.2 spg) signed with Florida and 5-10 SG Neenah Young (15.5 ppg) is headed to Princeton. Other returnees include 5-8 junior F Jada Moss (4.5 ppg) and Neenah Young’s younger sister Nicole, a 5-8 junior guard.

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: Unranked. The Wildcats return all but one starter from their 5A state championship team. Senior 5-10 PG Shaylee Gonzales (19.8) was the state Player of the Year and is a BYU signee. Senior 5-9 SG Lindsey VanAllen (17.8) has signed with UC-Santa Clara. Senior 5-7 G Hailey Walker (8.2 ppg) is headed to Fort Hays State and junior 5-8 W Zyan Smith (4.2 ppg) will also contribute. The top newcomers are: junior 5-11 F Olivia Champion, who played for the Costa Rican national team and freshman 5-7 SG Alaya Fitzgerald, who averaged 16 points a game for Mesquite Junior High.

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: 3. The Panthers won their 11th consecutive Virginia independent schools title and return three of their best players. Senior 6-3 F Amira Collins (14 ppg) has signed with Tennessee, junior 5-11 G Ashley Owusu (14 ppg) is a Maryland commit, and senior 6-0 W Kate Klimkiewicz (9.0 ppg) has signed with Boston College. Sophomore PG Aurea Gingras will step in as a starter and sophomore 6-0 F Meghan Kenefick was a starter last season for state runner-up Oakton, Va.

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: 9. The Monarchs were the state Open Division runners-up and return three starters, led by 6-1 junior G Haley Jones (15.3 ppg., 8.2 rpg., 2.6 apg.), who played for USA Basketball. The other returning starters are 6-0 senior G Karisma Ortiz (9.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.5 apg), who signed with Penn State, and 6-2 senior C Nicole Blakes (4.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg), who signed with San Diego. Another key returnee is 5-3 G Krissy Miyahara (5.5 ppg, 1.0 apg), who signed with Westmont College.

Key returnees include 5-8 senior SG Justice Ethridge, who signed with UNLV, 5-11 junior W Eboni Walker (10.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 3.0 spg), another UNLV commit in junior 5-4 PG Mel Isbell (10.0 ppg, 4.0 apg, 4.0 spg), and junior PG Aja Phoumiphat. The returnees include: UMass-bound Destiny Philoxy (6.0 ppg, 3.0 apg), a 5-7 point guard, 5-11 SG Earlette Scott (7.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.0 apg), who signed with Providence, and 6-0 F Diamond Shavis (9.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg), who signed with Manhattan. The top newcomers are 6-0 sophomore F Chloe Wilson, who averaged 11.1 points last season at Holy Trinity (Hicksville), and 5-6 junior G Lacha De Los Santos, who transferred from Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn).

MCD returns two starters and got a promising newcomer, senior 5-10 G Koi Love (15.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg), who transferred from Montverde Academy. The leading returnees are junior 5-7 PG Maria Alvarez (11.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg), who was the MVP of the DICK’S Nationals and senior 6-2 C Aasiya Berry (8.0 rpg). Jayda Theodule (8.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg), a 5-7 junior guard who transferred from Flanagan (Pembroke Pines), is a key newcomer.

Rock Creek also returns: senior 5-10 SG Carrie Gross (12.8 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.2 apg); 6-1 junior W Anissa Rivera (13.5 ppg, 9.6 rpg), who has committed to West Virginia; junior 5-10 PG Sonia Smith (8.5 ppg, 5.4 apg, 3.6 rpg); and senior 5-5 G Ayiana Keith (7.6 ppg, 3.0 apg). Senior PG Chanel Wilson (12.9 ppg, 5.0 apg), an Indiana commit, and senior SG Jewel Smalls give the team an experienced backcourt. Senior 5-10 G Jasmine Carson, a Georgia Tech signee, will be a big-time scorer as will sophomore G Mikaylin Glover, who transferred from Clarke Central (Athens). Two freshmen, 5-4 G Sianny Sanchez and G Denim DeShields (younger sister of former ALL-USA player Diamond DeShields), will also have an immediate impact.

The Bruins won the state AA public school title and return with more talent than they finished the season with because 6-0 F Donnetta Johnson, a Georgia signee, is back after missing the season with a knee injury. Baldwin also returns senior 5-7 PG Aziah Hudson (20 ppg), who has signed with Old Dominion, and 5-6 G Jenna Annecchiarico (14.8 ppg), who has signed with Eastern Michigan. Junior 5-7 G Kaia Harrison (10 ppg, 6.0 apg, 3.0 spg) is also a key player. The team’s top newcomer is 6-2 F Destiny Samuel, who transferred from Long Island Lutheran (Brooksville). Look for more from 6-1 senior C Sarah Henry and 5-10 sophomore F Elena Randolph (5.0 ppg).

The Bulldogs have two big-time bigs returning in 6-1 sophomore G Sasha Goforth (13.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.1 spg) and senior 6-2 F Jasmine Franklin (11.5 ppg, 10 rpg), who has committed to Missouri State. Junior 6-1 G Diamond Miller (18.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.5 spg) led the Warriors to the state Tournament of Champions title and played well for the USA Basketball U16 team this summer. Senior 5-7 G Camille Gray (9.5 ppg) is a Long Island-Brooklyn signee and twin sophomore guards Keona Schenck (10.1) and Kennady Schenck also return for Franklin.

New Hope Academy

Result: 2016-17 Final Ranking: Unranked. It’s the first year for varsity girls basketball at the school, which is in its ninth year, but the coach, Sam Caldwell, is hardly new, having won 140 games in five years at Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.). He snagged some of the Washington, D.C. area’s top players for the Tigers. Start with 6-5 senior C Rochelle Norris (10 ppg, 11 rpg), a former Riverdale Baptist player who signed with West Virginia. Jennifer Ezeh (9.0 ppg, 15 rpg), a junior 6-4 PF, also played at Riverdale Baptist. New Hope has two players from Mali in 6-2 sophomore SG Aicha Coulibaly and 5-10 sophomore PG Mariam Traore.
