2-0 Vestal braces for tougher test against Corning

By

The New York State Sports Writers Association’s initial 2012 football rankings make room for four Section 4 members among the top 10 in their respective classes — predictably headed by Maine-Endwell, tops among Class B teams.

One resurgent squad seeking to break into state rankings is Vestal, which will bring a 2-0 record into its matchup with 2-0 Corning scheduled for 7 tonight at Dick Hoover Stadium.

Corning — No. 22 in Class AA — is the second-highest scoring team in Section 4, and has put away its first two opponents by an average 33-point margin. The Golden Bears have yet to surrender a point in eight quarters, though Corning represents a considerable upgrade of opponent.

Vestal has struck for five touchdowns covering 29 or more yards. Sophomore Justin Dennis has had a hand in four of those scores, three on passes from junior quarterback Nick Wegmann. As for the Hawks, they’ve scored on three blocked punts and run in two fumble returns for touchdowns.

Here’s a look at how the rest of Week 3 shapes up:

(1-1) at Binghamton (1-1): For their only home game in the first four weeks of the season, the Patriots oppose an Elmira squad coming off a 38-14 loss to Corning. Binghamton QB Andre Yevchinecz has averaged 165 passing yards per game. …

Greene (2-0) at Dryden (1-1): The Trojans, ranked sixth in Class C, are coming off a 43-16 rout of Walton in which they rushed for 223 yards and passed for another 173 and three TDs of 30-plus yards. …

Tioga (2-0) at Waverly (2-0): The Tigers, ranked third among the state’s Class D teams, had three rushers reach triple-figure yardage totals — and went for 418 as a team — in Friday’s 34-7 rout of Newark Valley. Waverly, No. 4 in Class C, got 171 passing yards from Zack Cooney in a 28-6 win over Windsor. The Wolverines’ Austyn Bostwick has 14 receptions in two games. …
