Runner of the Year – Bella Burda, Arlington
Vital stats: Burda took first place at the New York State Federation Championships with a final time of 17:56.9 and also won the Section 1 Class A championship with a mark of 18:20.70. The sophomore finished second in the state Class A race in 17:37.2 and took second place at the Nike Cross Regional Championships in 17:55.2 to qualify for Nationals in Oregon, where she placed 45th.
Quotable: “She’s deadly,” Arlington coach Steve Arnett said. “She holds herself to a very high standard and she’s tough as nails. She could be the seventh guy on my team and they’re arguably the fourth best team in New York. She’s very quiet, very unassuming, and everybody likes her because her personality hasn’t changed one iota with all her success.”
Mary Kate Bida
Vital stats: Bida claimed second place at the Mid-Hudson Athletic League Championship race with a time of 19:35.50. She also came in third in the Section 9 Class C Championship with a mark of 18:42.12 and placed 13th in the state Class C race in 19:32.8.
Quotable: “This season was the culmination of five years of goal-setting that she’s put upon herself,” Millbrook coach Trace Keller said. “Every step that she’s taken, every race that she’s raced had been with the ultimate goal in mind of getting to the state meet. It was a tremendous effort on her part and we figured out she’s probably run enough miles to go from here to Los Angeles and back training.”
Vital stats: Cleaveland came in 18th in the New York State Class A race with a time 18:24.3 and placed 16th at the Nike Cross Regional in 18:58.2. She ran the New York State Federation Championship race in 19:00.4 to finish 13th, and came in fifth in the Section 1 Class A Championship with a time of 19:21.36.
Quotable: “Delphi is the third-fastest all-time at Arlington,” Arlington coach Steve Arnett said. “She’s easily among the top 15-20 girls in the entire state of New York in all classes. Delphi is very sweet but when she gets that look in her eye I know she’s ready to go. She really stepped up.”
School: New Paltz
Vital stats: Ferguson came in fifth in the Section 9 Class B Championship with a time of 19:31.24, and also placed fifth at the MHAL Championships with a mark of 20:43.78. She completed the state Class B championship in 20:14.4 to finish 67th.
Quotable: “She gave everything she could this season,” New Paltz coach Ann Gregory said. “She’s really worked through a lot of injuries and has matured as an athlete. She just goes after it now. She had to be the leader this year and learn how to pace herself.”
Vital stats: Marvin ranked 25th at the New York State Class C race with a mark of 19:57.2. She also placed seventh in the Section 1 Class C Championship with a time of 20:13.45.
Quotable: “Sarah brings a lot of leadership to the team even though she’s only a sophomore,” Pawling coach Adam Muroski said. “With two more years, there’s a really bright future for her, so we’re excited to see how she ends up.”
Vital stats: McCarthy earned a fourth-place finish in two big races, the Section 1 Class C Championship (20:06.30) and the Northern Counties meet (20:00.98). The senior finished 31st in the New York State Class C race with a time of 20:03.3.
Quotable: “Samantha was new to our program this year and she was great,” Muroski said. “She ran number one for us several races during the year. She was a silent leader. She doesn’t say much but she’ll talk to the girls when it counts.”
Vital stats: Meaney came in ninth in the Section 1 Class C Championship with a time of 20:34.55 and improved upon that with a time of 19:59.4 in the state Class C race to place 25th. The senior also finished sixth at the Northern Counties championship in 20:30.16.
Quotable: “She’s one of those kids that just puts in the work,” Muroski said. “She trained year-round for four years. It shows the type of character she has and she’s just a great leader for our team. She’s a big reason why the girls team was ranked third in the state this year.”
