Spartanburg, SC (WLTX) — When the Shrine Bowl kicks off Saturday in Spartanburg, a Midlands coach will be calling plays for the South Carolina team.
Airport head football coach Kirk Burnett is the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Sandlappers.
With just one week of practice, the South Carolina coaching staff has been busy getting players used to the terminology that will be used in the All-Star game. Burnett runs the same offense at Airport that is used by Stratford head coach Ray Stackley who is the head coach of the South Carolina team. That familiarity has helped this week as the coaches prepare a gameplan to execute against the Tar Heels.
Serving as a Shrine Bowl assistant means the past year has quite busy for Burnett who is also the athletics director at Airport. There are weekly meetings with his fellow Shrine Bowl coaches and a lot of that time is spent figuring out which players to put on the roster.
Burnett says he has been pleased with the seriousness the players are approaching the game. He equates the Shrine Bowl to a college bowl where the teams see each other on a daily basis but will go head to head at the end of the week.
