Here are the American Family Insurance All-Northeast Ohio Top 5 Performances of the 2012 high school football season!
Number 5: We start in Week 10 and the 122nd meeting between Massillion Washington and Canton McKinley. After faking a field goal attempt, Massillion’s Brody Tonn finds Leslie Dudley for a 7-yard touchdown reception for the first score of the game. What a call! That would set the tone for the game and Massillion would go on to win, 37-29.
Number 4: For top performance No. 4, we stay in week 10. It’s the “Holy War” between St. Edward and St. Ignatius. On third-and-1 from the 33-yard line, the Eagles try some trickery and run the flea flicker. Quarterback Ryan Fallon finds Anthony Young for the touchdown! St. Edward would go on to beat St. Ignatius, 20-13, and capture the top seed in Division I, Region 1 of the Ohio High School Athletic Association state playoffs.
Number 3: We now travel back in time to the Division V regional semifinal between Kirtland and St. Ursuline, Kirtland came back from a 24-0 deficit in the first half and it all came down to the final play. Ursuline decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Quarterback Chris Durken tried to run it around the end, but was stuffed by the Hornets’ defense. Kirtland hung on for the win, 38-37!
Number 2: For the season’s second-best play, we stay in the regional semifinal round of the playoffs. It takes place during the back-and-forth battle between Mentor and St. Ignatius. In the third overtime, Mentor goes for the two-point conversion and the win. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky rolls left and finds Brandon Fritts in the end zone — Mentor wins, 57-56, in triple overtime!
Number 1: It’s only appropriate that the season’s top performance took place in a state championship game, right? The top play comes from the Division III title tilt between St. Vincent -St. Mary and Bellevue. On fourth-and-7, the Fighting Irish call the fake punt! Newman Williams goes around the end, steps over defenders and bounces off another while running through the rest as he stretches past the goal line for the score. St. Vincent-St. Mary would go on to win the championship, 42-21. What a way to cap off the season for the Fighting Irish!
