Here is this week’s American Family Insurance All-Northeast Ohio Top 5 Performances from Week 1 of the Ohio High School Athletic Association state football playoffs.
Number 5: Westlake quarterback Kent Axcell takes it up the middle on a keeper. One cut and he goes 93 yards for the touchdown. Despite the stellar play, Madison Comprehensive upsets Westlake, 14-7, to advance.
Number 4: The week’s No. 4 top performance comes from the Austintown Fitch-St Ignatius game. Fitch quarterback Matt Futkos starts out from the 3-yard line, pushes and pushes, stays upright and stretches for the goal line. What effort! Despite the stellar play, Ignatius win, 35-26.
Number 3: The week’s No. 3 top performance comes from the Mogadore- Steubenville Catholic Central game. Mogadore’s Gary Strain continues to fight for yards, shedding tacklers on the way to a 30-yard touchdown run. Mogadore wins big, 49-24.
Number 2: The week’s No. 2 top performance comes from the Liberty-Streetsboro game. Streetsboro punter Trey Close is blocked by Liberty’s Cody BuCher. Watch it again — watch the stretch! Liberty goes on to win 48-35.
Number 1: The week’s No. 1 top performance comes from the Akron Ellet-Kent Roosevelt game at Kent State University’s Dix Stadium. Ellet quarterback Jake Fisher is scrambling and has his pass intercepted by Roosevelt’s Corey Spicer at the 10-yard line. Spicer turns the corner and runs 90 yards for the score. Kent Roosevelt goes on to win 24-7.
