Thirteen players registered a point for the Vestal hockey team, highlighted by Andrew Gleason’s five goals and two assists, as the Golden Bears outscored Chenango Forks 14-6 on Sunday in a Broome County High School Hockey Association contest.
Vestal (7-0) also got two goals and five assists from Andrew Schutt, along with two goals by Mason Harner. Ryan Reese scored Vestal’s fourth goal in the first period to double up Forks at 4-2, and Vestal maintained at least that margin the rest of the game.
Chenango Forks was led by Josh Maus, who had a goal and two assists.
Adam Carmen and Andrew Kinglsey combined to make 30 saves for Forks.
Chenango Valley 4, Johnson City 1: Chenango Valley took the lead early in the first period after Rocco DeAngelo’s goal at 8:05 and Matt Benko’s goal at 6:47 and never trailed.
Nate Walker helped Johnson City avoid the shutout, scoring with 12:15 left in the third period.
Union-Endicott 3, Maine-Endwell 2: Tyler Colasanto kept the game from overtime by scoring U-E’s winning goal unassisted with 2:46 remaining.
Five soccer players honored
Susquehanna Valley’s Mike Rood, who led his team to a Section 4 championship, was among five boys and girls soccer players named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region II team.
Along with Rood on the boys squad were Johnson City’s Hans Purtell and Elmira’s Alex Varkatzas.
Vestal’s Rachel Terry and Heide Stahl were named to the girls all-region team.
