Ankeny's Friedman commits to play basketball at Northern Iowa

By

Ted Friedman has had time to grow up as Ankeny’s post presence.
The 6-foot-9 soon-to-be senior has been starting for the Hawks since the beginning of his freshman season — a run of 75 games that has included back-to-back third-place finishes in Class 4-A.
Friedman will keep developing in-state after verbally committing to Northern Iowa and coach Ben Jacobson on Friday.
“I was thinking about it a lot this week and they were always there for me,” Friedman said. “The coaches and teammates are great and I just felt like it was a perfect fit.”
Friedman averaged 10.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last season. He was Ankeny’s only starter taller than 6-4.
“He’s started since he was a freshman and every year he’s gotten stronger, much more aggressive and competitive down in the post,” Ankeny coach John Petersen said.
Friedman selected Northern Iowa over several other mid-major offers, including Creighton and Drake. He plays AAU basketball for Ankeny’s Kingdom Hoops.
“Northern Iowa has been there the longest and probably recruited me the hardest, so I just felt the most comfort there,” Friedman said.
Ankeny lost just five total games in Friedman’s sophomore and junior campaigns. Petersen thinks his center will relish the opportunity to lead the squad after playing on experienced, guard-laden teams.
“The leadership role is something he hasn’t had to fill as much as what he’ll have to this season, becoming comfortable with being the go-to guy,” Petersen said.
Committing on his 18th birthday, Friedman joins Iowa City West wing Jeremy Morgan as Iowa high schoolers in Jacobson’s 2013 class.
“I for sure need to get stronger — all my skills need to get a little bit better so I can play at the next level,” Friedman said.
While the CIML has seen plenty of Friedman in the past three seasons, he’s hoping the 2012-13 Hawks can surprise the competition.
“It’ll be great to just focus on my senior season and on getting us back to state,” Friedman said.
