Arcadia uses big run to blow out Sunnyslope

Coming off a disappointing three point road loss to Gilbert Williams Field, the Phoenix Arcadia girls basketball team wanted to use Friday’s home game to get back to its winning ways.

Arcadia blew out Phoenix Sunnyslope 71-18 and wasted no time getting started.

Led by senior captain Kylie Herd, Arcadia began the game on a 21-3 run and led 46-7 at the half.

Herd, who averages 9.5 points per game, scored eight of the team’s first 10 points and finished with 10 points.

Arcadia was 26-4 last season and made it to the second round of the playoffs, so it is no surprise they are a good team. However, it may have been a surprise to see them finish the game with 71 points as it entered the game averaging 45.8 points per game, a number it eclipsed in the first half.

Arcadia coach Ives Machiz’s squad took a 30 point lead with five and a half minutes left in the first half, and Sunnyslope never had an answer for the pressure and tempo that Arcadia (6-2) was playing with.

In addition to Herd, senior Taylor Steger and sophomore Andrea Goulette had strong games for Arcadia. Steger, a captain, finished with 13 points and Goulette finished with 12. Junior guard Tori Wright added 11 points of her own.

On the other side of the court, Mya Timms led Sunnyslope with seven points.
