1. Teurlings Catholic (5-0)
Skinny: The Rebels continued their winning way as they used a balanced offensive attack and benefited from another dominant performance by their defense to shut out the Crowley Gents 38-0 on Friday.
Next Game: Host St. Thomas More.
2. Notre Dame (3-1)
Skinny: It appears the Pioneers get better and better every week, but their performance Friday against Catholic High of New Iberia may have been their best yet. The Pios used big plays on offense (79-yard touchdown run, 80-yard touchdown run) and defense (99-yard interception return for a touchdown) to claim a 47-16 win over the Panthers.
Next Game: At Jennings.
3. Acadiana (4-1)
Skinny: The Rams’ dominant running game was on display again in Friday’s 40-27 win over Sulphur, as running backs Edward Cormier, Shane Francis and Cardaye Spencer each rushed for more than 100 yards.
Next Game: At Barbe.
4. Loreauville (5-0)
Skinny: The Tigers got ahead so quickly in their 47-7 win over Hamilton Christian, their starters didn’t spend much time on the field in the second half. Equipped with so much talent on the offensive side of the football, the Tigers may not get tested again until they face Catholic High-N.I. in Week 8.
Next Game: Host West St. Mary.
5. Carencro (3-1)
Skinny: The Bears are quietly beginning to roll on the offensive side of the football and it was evident in Friday’s 33-14 win over Sam Houston. Carencro rushed for 340 yards in the win and saw Jaylan Rose (13-131 3 TDs), Galen Carter (12-91) and Corey Willis (6-67) combine for 289 yards of it. With a defense that has proven it can be dominant, the Bears could be a team on the rise if their offense continues to progress as it is.
Next Game: At Comeaux.
6. Breaux Bridge (4-1)
Skinny: Talk about receiving a scare. The Tigers struggled against a Woodlawn team that both Lafayette High and Northside, who aren’t ranked, defeated. Breaux Bridge needed overtime, but did come away with a 14-7 win to increase their win streak to three.
Next Game: At St. Martinville.
7. Rayne (5-0)
Skinny: The Wolves had their closest contest of the season as they squeaked by South Beauregard 14-12 to remain unbeaten on the season. The Wolves for the most part this season have taken care of their opponents in convincing fashion, so the close victory may have something to do with looking ahead.
Next Game: Host Livonia.
8. New Iberia (4-1)
Skinny: The Yellow Jackets continued its dominance with another impressive victory Friday as they defeated crosstown rival Westgate 43-7. With the exception of their loss to Lafayette High, the most impressive thing about the Yellow Jackets is their ability to jump on opposing teams from the start.
Next Game: Host H.L. Bourgeois.
9. Vermilion Catholic (4-1)
Skinny: Although they are still one of the best teams in Class 1A, the train that has been the Screamin’ Eagles were knocked off the tracks Friday as they were defeated 21-20 by Dunham. The loss isn’t expected to be more than a bump in the road for the Eagles, who will continue to be a force as long as Jacoby Davis is lined up in their backfield.
Next Game: At Hanson.
10. Catholic-NI (3-2)
Skinny: The Panthers didn’t turn in the type of performance they had hoped for in their 47-16 loss to Notre Dame, but the game was a lot closer than the score would lead you to believe. Like many of the teams ahead of them, the Panthers will be there in the end. The Panthers have two losses in the first five weeks of the season, but there’s no shame in losing to Teurlings Catholic and Notre Dame.
Next Game: At Notre Dame.
