Around Kentuckiana | Mercy's Josh Bloomer resigns after winning state softball title

Mercy Academy softball coach Josh Bloomer, fresh off a state championship, announced his resignation Thursday, citing family reasons.

“With two young boys, I felt as though I needed to make the decision that was best for my family,” he wrote in his resignation letter. “I will be able to spend more time with my wife and sons and be more involved on a daily basis.”

Bloomer led the Jaguars to a 37-8 record this year, winning 25th District and Seventh Region titles en route to the state crown.

“It’s nice to leave knowing we finally accomplished the goal that we’ve had as a program for many years,” he said.

Bloomer, a teacher at Mercy the past seven years, said he will take a teaching position with Jefferson County Public Schools but will not coach high school softball. He will continue coaching the Louisville Lady Sluggers 16-and-under travel team in the summer and fall.

Track and field

Ballard graduate Ronnie Baker was named the Gatorade Kentucky Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year for the second straight time. He won the 100- and 400-meter dashes at the Class 3-A state meet, and his 47.18-second clocking in the 400 was among the top 25 high school times in the nation.

Baker maintained a 3.54 GPA, was a member of the Beta Club and has volunteered at a homeless shelter and food bank. He signed with Texas Christian University.

Basketball

Two recent Southern Indiana high school graduates announced their college plans.

Henryville’s Brad Everage, a 6-foot-3 forward who averaged 12 points and four rebounds last season, will attend Sterling College in Kansas, where he also will run track.

Jordan Thompson, a 6-6 center from Floyd Central, will play for Indiana University Southeast.
