Astronaut High took advantage of a big turnover to defeat Jensen Beach in a defensive slugfest Friday night.
With just three minutes remaining, the War Eagles got the ball back in Jensen Beach territory and made it count as Brandon Wright banged his way through the Jensen Beach defense for a 36-yard touchdown three plays later, giving them a 13-6 lead that held up the rest of the night.
Getting through tough defenses was a good accomplishment in a game that saw 22 tackles for loses and eight sacks between the two teams.
The Falcons struck first on a five play, 60-yard drive with 1:02 remaining in the opening quarter. Quarterback Alex Ogle hit receiver Mikel Carter on a 37-yard pass for the score.
On the kickoff following Jensen’s TD, Astronaut’s Steven Williams ran untouched for a 79-yard score and the PAT kick made it 7-6.
“We work hard on special teams every day,” Astronaut coach Randy Hallock said as his team improved to 4-2. “We tell our kids that special teams will win one or two games a season for us. This was one.”
THEY SAID IT: “We had a full schedule (two seasons back), then St. Cloud got a new head coach and dropped us,” said Astronaut head coach Randy Hallock. “I was looking for a game and Jensen Beach was looking for a game.”
